EDU 02 — How Do NFTs Work?

NFTs can sound complicated at first, but the basic process is actually pretty simple once you break it down.

An NFT works by connecting a digital item — like a photo, collectible, badge, or memory — to a blockchain record that proves ownership.

Think of it like a digital certificate of ownership attached to a file.

What Happens When an NFT Is Created?

When someone creates an NFT, a few things happen:

  • A digital item is uploaded
  • A unique blockchain record is created
  • The NFT is connected to a wallet owner
  • The ownership becomes publicly verifiable

That blockchain record cannot easily be changed or duplicated.

What Does the Blockchain Do?

The blockchain acts like a permanent digital ledger.

Instead of ownership being tracked by a company database alone, ownership is recorded across a distributed network of computers.

This creates transparency and helps prove authenticity.

Do NFTs Store the Actual Photo?

Sometimes — but not always.

Many NFTs store information called metadata, which points to the digital item and describes it.

This can include:

  • Images
  • Descriptions
  • Titles
  • Creator information
  • Collection details

What Makes NFTs Different From Normal Files?

Anyone can copy a normal image online.

But NFTs introduce something new: verifiable ownership.

Even if copies exist, the blockchain still shows which wallet officially owns the original NFT.

Do You Need Cryptocurrency?

Historically, many NFT platforms required cryptocurrency and complicated wallets.

Today, platforms like Giga-Mint simplify the process by allowing people to purchase NFTs using traditional payment methods while still receiving ownership in their personal wallet.

Why People Use NFTs

People use NFTs for many different reasons:

  • Digital art
  • Collectibles
  • Sports memorabilia
  • Family memories
  • Certificates
  • Community badges
  • Digital ownership

At their core, NFTs are simply digital items connected to provable ownership.
